In my garden on Lesvos

In my garden on Lesvos

The creation of Simply B yoga started many years ago.  It evolved from a feeling that I was not a human being;  more of a human ‘doing’. Life was hectic and I felt rushed, pressured, tired of always having more to do. I wanted time to ‘simply be’ myself.  I took up yoga as a hobby and this led me to an amazing and inspirational holiday experience of Kundalini yoga.

I went on that first Kundalini yoga holiday through a series of synchronistic events.  When I arrived in Dahab, between the Sinai desert and the Red Sea, I was in a completely strange culture, and at first I was dismayed to find no other yoga students/guests on this holiday.  This rapidly became a blessing because I had one-to-one tuition from a most amazing and gifted Kundalini Yoga teacher.  Her name is Sara Campbell and she still offers yoga holidays in that wonderful place. (her website ‘Discover your Depths)

The type of yoga Sara taught me was Kundalini yoga, and I’d never heard of it before.  At first it felt bizarre and weird;  Sara was dressed all in white wearing a turban!  This yoga was accompanied by unusual songs and music.   Each session contained meditation and chanting;  I felt especially self-conscious during the chanting.  But what truly got under my skin from the very first session was the little song at the end: “May the long time sun shine upon you; all love surround you, and the pure light within you, guide your way on”.

After a week in the light of Dahab between the Red Sea and the Sinai desert, I was transformed.  I went home on a high I’d never experienced before and took with me a very small seed of a yoga practice.  The seed grew as I developed my daily practice and I soon needed more variety.  With no Kundalini yoga classes anywhere in my vicinity the only possible way of increasing my personal practice was to enrol at a teacher-training school.

I enrolled with the International School of Kundalini Yoga in the UK   (i-SKY),  and soon became a teacheB at Villa mariar myself.

In 2006 I formally set up Simply B Yoga and began to teach classes and workshops in my native Staffordshire and as these gained  popularity,  I developed my first Kundalini Yoga holiday in Greece, on the small and incredibly peaceful island of Paxos.

Having retired some years ago from my stressful former career in the legal workplace I remained happily settled in the peaceful countryside of rural Staffordshire.  However, my desire to live and work in Greece, born over 25 years ago on my very first visit there, did not fade.

In 2014  I took the final steps towards realising the dream of living in Greece and left the UK to live on  the beautiful and peaceful island of Lesvos,  in the north Aegean sea.  Lesvos is a large, varied, unspoilt island, with a tranquil atmosphere and the wildness of pine forests, fascinating mountain villages, and olive groves stretching as far as the eye can see.  The people of Lesvos are among the warmest and most welcoming anywhere in the world, I believe.

Now I run a Kundalini Yoga holiday here each springtime, in conjunction with the Votsala Hotel in Thermi, on the island’s east coast.  See more about this here.   And in 2018 for the second time I’m working alongside my friend, life-coach Angela Smyth contributing to her ‘Seeds 4 Change’ Retreat on Lesbos;  details here.  My aim is to encourage visitors to Lesvos, it is a truly special island; and to practice yoga in this place is an unmissable experience.
